What can freeze authority do?
It can freeze and thaw Token accounts for that Token. It does not control minting or transfer ownership.
Is freeze authority required?
No. A Token can be created without one, or an existing freeze authority can be permanently revoked. The exception is a default-frozen Token-2022 mint: it must retain freeze authority so new accounts can be thawed.
Can a revoked freeze authority be restored?
No. Once revoked, the freeze authority cannot be added back to that Token. A default-frozen Token-2022 mint cannot revoke it because new accounts need that authority to be thawed.
Keep account controls deliberate.
Freeze Authority lets the current authority transfer or permanently revoke the ability to freeze Token accounts. The connected wallet must match the Token's current freeze authority before a change can be submitted.
Revoking freeze authority removes that capability for good. Consider the Token's operating policy carefully before transferring control or making it permanent.
